National Doughnut Day

Today is National Doughnut Day. That means you get doughnut deals at the various doughnut chains today. Krispy Kreme seems to be doing the best National Doughnut Day offer where you get your choice of a free doughnut. I went to Krispy Kreme near Millenia and got a Lemon Kreme Cake Doughnut. They describe it as a lemon flavored cake doughnut with a rosette of lemon-infused Kreme filling in the center, topped with cake crumbles and powdered sugar.
You can also get your free doughnuts from Dunkin Donuts. You still get a free donut, but you need to buy a beverage. Not nearly as good of a doughnut deal, but Dunkin Donuts are much more prevalent in Central Florida compared to Krispy Kremes.

Cafe Beignet in New Orleans, LA

When I walked by a place called Cafe Beignet on Royal Street in the French Quarter in New Orleans, I decided to stop in. I had sampled beignets from Cafe Du Monde a couple of days earlier and wanted to get beignets somewhere else in New Orleans to compare.
Cafe Beignet was in a cool little brick building. It was long and narrow with low, arched ceilings.
Cafe Beignet had signs hanging on the wall proudly announcing that they were featured on Food Network's Best Thing I Ever Ate with Alton Brown.
I did a little Youtube searching and found the segment from the show that featured Cafe Beignet. Alton Brown endorsed beignets are probably good beignets, right?

I didn't get the proper beignet accompaniment and get chicory coffee. I instead ordered a chai latte to drink. It was pretty standard.
Then it was time to try the beignets! I'm sorry to disagree with Alton Brown, but I preferred the beignets from Cafe Du Monde. The beignets here were much denser than the fluffy beignets that Cafe Du Monde served. Not to say that these weren't good. I think it would be hard to mess up a beignet too badly, but if I had to choose, fluffy beignets would beat dense beignets.

Krispy Skremes at Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in Orlando, FL

I went to the Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in Orlando near Millenia Mall to try their Halloween/Autumn doughnuts. They have all sorts of doughnuts known as Krispy Skremes decorated for Halloween, including Jack-o-Lanterns and spiderwebs. They also have Ghostbusters doughnuts to celebrate the movie's 30th anniversary.
I liked their Pumpkin Cheesecake Doughnut. It was stuffed with a pumpkin cheesecake filling, topped with creme cheese icing and gingersnap cookie crumbles. Also pictured is the Pumpkin Spice Doughnut.
The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man Doughnut and Ghostbusters Doughnut were also tasted. The Stay Puft Marshmallow Doughnut was a marshmallow Kreme-filled shell topped with white icing, decorated with Stay Puft Marshmallow Man’s familiar face and a sugar piece hat. The Ghostbusters Doughnut consisted of a marshmallow Kreme-filled shell topped with white icing, a decorative green “splat” inspired by Slimer, and a Ghostbusters logo sugar piece.
Jack-o-Lantern Doughnut!
They had a doughnut decorating station set up and I created this Ghostbusters Doughnut. Should I be proud of my slime placement on this doughnut?
Now for the important part! Everyone likes free food. Make sure you wear a costume to Krispy Kreme on Halloween. It will get you a free doughnut!

Dunkin Donuts in Longwood, FL

I think this heart-shaped, cream filled doughnut from Dunkin Donuts in Longwood is probably an appropriate food item to post for Valentines Day. Have fun facing the crowds as you try to eat out tonight!
